The Top 10 Homestead Christmas Gift Guide – Part 1

December 5, 2015 , In: Cleaning, Cooking, Gardening, Product reviews , With: No Comments

Just in time for the holidays, I’m going to recommend my top 10 gifts for your favourite Urban Homesteader. These are in no particular order, but are some of the most durable, built-for-life supplies I can find. I hope you like them as much as I have!

  1. 91bL6aA5bkL._SL1500_Lodge Cast Iron

Lodge is one of the few companies left that do real cast iron, that’s not just carbon steel, so it’s built to last. It’s also made in the US, and is still iron poured into sand molds. They have frying pans, dutch ovens, grill pans, and much more. They even have silicone handle covers so you don’t burn the crap out of your hand when putting in the oven, or cooking at high heat. Not to mention, these are SUPER AFFORDABLE. Yeah, you can spend a ton of money on La Creuset stuff, which is amazeballs, but this stuff is 1/10th the price, and lasts just as long.

While they’re listed as pre-seasoned, you should still take the time to season them properly, as they have a texture from the casting process, and won’t be super non-stick until they’re well-seasoned.

Soil-Scoop jpg2. The Soil Scoop

The most versatile gardening tool I’ve ever used. It has an awesome point at the end for breaking up clumps, serrated edges for getting through weeds, and can be used as a shovel, rake, weeder, really just about anything. It’s the only hand tool I use, and lasts forever. Also made in the USA, this thing is a gardener’s best friend

img4c3. Cuisinart Mini Food Processor

Now, I hate having a bajillion small appliances, and have a very small kitchen, but this bad boy has all the power of the big guys, but is super cheap. I’ve used it for soap, sauces, dressings, chopping hard spices, really just about anything. Mine has lasted for years, and been through more abuse than I can throw at it, without so much as a dent, or needing a blade sharpening. Also, super small, so great for itty bitty kichens.

IMG_7159_1024x10244. The S’well Water Bottle

I’m about the most abusive person of my possessions. I may or may not have run over previous water bottles with my car… allegedly. I should have a second career as a product tester, because if a product can survive my house, it can survive anything.

That being said, I’ve had this water bottle for 3 years, and have yet to be able to mar, dent, or mess it up. It ACTUALLY keeps hot drinks hot for 8 hours, and cold drinks cold for 12. It’s ridiculously good at its job, and comes in a ton of super sexy colours/patterns, and in 3 sizes. Cannot recommend this bad boy enough.

GC-AB-201455. E-cloth window cleaning cloths

I bought this on a whim 5 years ago, and have literally used it to clean every mirror and window in my house since. The cloth has no signs of wear after 5 years of weekly use, uses ZERO cleaners or chemicals, leaves no streaks on glass, and gets rid of the slimiest fingerprints and dog noseprints/drool. Get it damp with water, wash your windows. Throw in laundry when it gets dirty. Boom.

Seriously, buy this thing. You will never buy a window cleaner or paper towel again.

…stay tuned for part 2!
